To Get More We Must Become More

November 3, 2009

Motivation isn’t enough

We can accomplish much good if we have the right motivation. This motivation often springs from a defining moment in which we say, “Enough!”

However, motivation alone will not carry us to our goals. We must employ vision, planning, action, and discipline. We must build within ourselves the right skills to succeed in our chosen areas.

Skill-building

Imagine setting a goal to double your income in five years. Many paths can lead you to achieve your goal: changing jobs; starting a business; and writing books. You could choose dozens of actions to help you double your income.

Most likely, you’ll need to build new skills. You will need to improve and broaden your existing abilities.

Balanced learning

To enhance your opportunities, you can spend your entire life obtaining learning. It’s never too late to learn new skills and ideas.

Study a variety of subjects. Don’t confine yourself to one area of learning. If you develop broad knowledge in a variety of areas you can adapt your career to meet the market demands.

Also, through balancing your study, you will become a more engaging conversationalist. Your understanding of world events will grow.

Perseverence

Be resolute like Heber J. Grant.

Mr. Grant, a great religious leader in the western United States, loved hymns. Unfortunately, he could not carry a tune. Daughter Frances says of her father, “He had no sense of pitch at all. You could play a note on the piano then play a note four notes higher, and he could not tell if it was higher or lower.”

At age ten, he joined a singing class and the professor told him that he could never learn to sing. Some years later, a man told Grant that he could learn to sing, but the man said he would like to be forty miles away while Heber practiced.

But Grant persevered. “He would practice,” Frances recalled, “just playing a note on the piano with one finger and practice and practice. Of all his accomplishments he was proudest of learning to sing.”

Grant said, “The most I ever worked was to sing 400 songs in four days.” It may also have been the most work for Rudger Clawson and J. Golden Kimball too. On a trip with these two, Grant asked if they had any objection to his singing 100 hymns that day.

“After I had sung about forty tunes,” he recorded, “they assured me that if I sang the remaining sixty they would be sure to have nervous prostration.”  He sang the full 100.

Heber J. Grant often quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson: “That which we persist in doing becomes easy to do; not that the nature of the thing has changed, but that our power to do has increased.”

Building a library

Business philosopher Jim Rohn encourages us to leave three important legacies for our families:
. our life in pictures
. our life written in our journals, and
. an abundant library

Building a library is a wonderful labor of love. We not only lift ourselves, but we also elevate our families.

Areas of study

Rohn suggests these sections for your library:

. History
. Philosophy
. Biographies and autobiographies
. Law
. Fine literature
. Accounting
. Economics
. Culture (Art, music, dance)

I would add the following sections:
. Spirituality
. Business
. Personal development

As you build your skills, seek balance in your learning, and build great libraries, you position yourself for success in all areas of your life: your personal life, your family life, your spiritual life, your professional life, and your financial life.

As you learn new skills and ideas, you will become one who can succeed in the areas of your choosing.

Balanced success through balanced learning.

Quotes

Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune. Jim Rohn

Learning is the beginning of wealth. Learning is the beginning of health. Learning is the beginning of spirituality. Searching and learning is where the miracle process all begins. Jim Rohn

Never begrudge the money you spend on your own education. Jim Rohn

To earn more, you must learn more. Brian Tracy

None of us…knows enough. The learning process is an endless process. We must read, we must observe, we must assimilate, and we must ponder that to which we expose our minds. Gordon B. Hinckley

Hoping and dreaming of a better world are not enough if we are unwilling to work; but when we work towards our dreams, wonderful things can happen. Lloyd Newell

Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound. The man who does not shrink from self-crucifixion can never fail to accomplish the object upon which his heart is set. This is true of earthly as of heavenly things. Even the man whose object is to acquire wealth must be prepared to make great personal sacrifices before he can accomplish his object; and how much more so he who would realize a strong and well-poised life. Give Before You Ask

September 1, 2009

One of my core principles of effective networking

is “Give before you ask.”

Aspects of this principle include:

. To GET more referrals you must GIVE more

referrals

. Finding ways to serve by connecting your

networking friends

. Forwarding weblinks or reports pertaining to their

industries, and

. Giving value while you show your credibility

Kathy and I learned early that Christmas giving was

more effective when we made sure that each of our

kids received at least one gift that made for a

dramatic opening and at least one that had lasting

value. The dramatic gifts were often discarded early

in favor of the ones with lasting value.

In business networking we can choose to give

somewhat expensive specialty items like magnetized

clips, paperweights, mouse pads and such. Or we

can give away stuff that has lasting value.

By combining value and credibility you are more likely

to attract more new business and referrals.

Some gifts to give:

  • Referrals
  • Reports
  • Blogs
  • Newsletters
  • Podcasts
  • Vidcasts

One of my friends posts a list of all of the hundreds of

networking events in Omaha each month. He couples

the web list with a monthly e-mail notice. This provides

a valuable service to his contacts and drives traffic to

his website.

To see his site, go to

http://www.Whettstone.com/networking.aspx

Another friend uses a creative approach–he hosts a

quarterly party and invites his contacts to bring all of

their junk mail. The people in his network enjoy grilled

hamburgers and other goodies while he gathers their

unsolicited mail. He then uses that mail to contact the

senders and offer to use his printing services and this

targeted mailing lists.

You can download the free report that I give to my new

networking contacts at

http://www.DavidDeFord.com/Networking_Gold_Is_in_the_Followup.pdf

Use a little creativity and come up with your own unique

offering that highlights your expertise.

I wish you every success.

Networking Gold Is in the Follow Up

August 17, 2009

Immediate and creative follow up will enhance the

goodwill and friendly feelings you’ve engendered at

networking events. When you follow up effectively you

stand above the others. Most networkers rely on their

savvy at networking events to create the desired effect.

They feel that seeing people repeatedly at these

functions generates enough goodwill. Not so.

The frequency of such contact does help. But when you

follow up you stand well above the others. You show

professionalism, discipline, and thoughtfulness.

Want to destroy goodwill in your follow up? Call them

up and start selling to them or send them a form letter.

Rather, you want to enhance the goodwill they felt

when they met you.

Want to underwhelm your contact? Send them a

generic e-mail.

Wise networkers find more personal ways to strengthen

their business relationships.

Schedule Time Immediately Following the Event

Rather than blocking out only the meeting time on your

calendar, add another half hour so that you can immediately

follow up. If you wait too long you won’t remember anything

from your conversation. Also, you really stand out if you mail

something out to them that day!

I always block out time following a networking event. It’s a

habit and a discipline. You’re going to take the time anyway.

You might as well do it early as opposed to late. You’ll be

more likely to get it done if you do it earlier and you’ll

strengthen the impact.

Phone Calls

I’ll admit I have a personal bias against receiving phone

follow up. Phone calls are intrusive. They hurt productivity.

If I don’t stop my project to answer the phone, I’m wondering

who called and what opportunity awaits.

But putting my own prejudice aside, many other people feel

less than receptive to phone calls. They dislike the interruption

and they feel apprehensive about being put on the spot from

an aggressive seller.

Such calls rarely nurture goodwill.

Voice mails regarding networking follow up rarely get

returned.

E-mails

Sending an e-mail is free and very simple. It’s quick. You

can copy and paste the same message to everyone. Or

you can blind copy everyone you met at the event. It’s so

easy that most people who follow up prefer this method.

Your contacts know that. They know that you put very little

thought, no expense, and only seconds into your

communication. You’ve underwhelmed them.

Such e-mails rarely get saved. They’re briefly scanned

and deleted immediately. At best, they’ll send you a quick

reply thanking you for the e-mail. If you write more than

fifty words in your e-mail very few of your contacts will

even read it.

E-mail follow up barely registers in the contacts’ minds.

Voice mails rarely get returned and e-mails usually get

deleted.

Personal Notes and Cards

If you want to greatly enhance the goodwill you’ve

generated on meeting someone, follow up with a personal

note or card.

You may sort your mail prior to opening it like I do. First, I

open anything that looks like it may contain a check I’ve

been expecting. Second, I open greeting cards. I know that

anything in a card-sized envelope will never contain bad

news. After that, the fun’s over. Next I open #10 business

envelopes. I know that they usually contain sales letters,

credit card offers (yes, I still get them), and other

uninteresting stuff. Lastly, I look at postcards and other

printed sales materials.

Checks and greeting cards are welcome one hundred

percent of the time. In fact, you can send me either

anytime you wish. My office address is: 13964 Margo

Street, Omaha, NE 68138. My birthday is November 23rd.

Send me a birthday card. I love receiving them. Don’t you?

Greeting cards punch a more powerful blow when they’re

not expected and when there’s no obligation attached. I’m

pleased to get a birthday card from my mother. But she

has to send me one. When people I meet through networking

send me a card, I’m impressed.

Sending greeting cards to networking contacts has netted

me more new consulting clients than radio advertising, phone

calling, and public speaking combined. It works.

That said, I have some guidelines for you to make your

card sending more powerful.

. Don’t send pre-printed, plain-looking Thank You cards.

Boorriinngg!

. Use language that is focused on your contact, not on yourself.

. Do not ask for anything nor add any wording that implies that

you’re selling.

. Use your own handwriting or use a system that prints in your

own handwriting font.

. Use blue ink rather than black. It looks less “photocopy-like”.

. Before sending the card, think, “If I were to receive this card,

how long would I keep it?” Shoot for cards that the recipient will

keep forever.

I used to hand write every card. But that took so much time

that I only sent cards to select contacts. Of the five business

cards I received at an event, only the top two would receive a

card. Plus, finding a card that stands out isn’t easy.

Now I use an online card sending system that lets me create

unique, killer cards on my keyboard, and I still use my own

handwriting font and signature.

I scan the contact’s business card on my printer/scanner/fax

machine and upload the jpeg to the system. I then spend about

two minutes creating the cover and content and adding the

address for the envelope.

The cover shows a hand holding their business card. It sounds

simple but it delivers an impact when the contact opens the

envelope to see a greeting card with their own business card

on the front.

My inside content is simple–something like:

“I enjoyed meeting you at the chamber event this morning.

I’m impressed with your success. I wish we had more time

to talk. Let’s look for each other at future events.”

Simple, complimentary, and focused on the contact.

Sending cards like this one is my strongest marketing tool.

The cards cost me less than a buck each but they really

deliver.

If you don’t know someone using SendOutCards and want

to send a couple of sample cards at my expense, go to

http://go2468.com/cards.

Voice mails rarely get retrieved, e-mails usually get deleted,

but greeting cards get read and displayed.
